It is really a matter or personal preference. I personally love trying different techniques all the time. my routines usually vary in accordance to how I want them to look. There is no "best way" because not everyone will have the same opinion on it.

I put a bit of mascara on a brush (the one with a comb and a brushy bit) and after wiping it on some paper and it's like a grey colour I use it. it gives me a brown.
