Has anyone taken minocycline for acne? I want to know how did it go for you? I know every person reacts different to such pills and should talk to their dermatologist but I have taken tetracycline which is kinda the same and is without prescription.. any ways keeping that aside, has anyone take them and did you have great results?

Is that like the accutane pills?

Yes! I've used a brand called solodyn that has the main active ingredient (minocycline) it worked AWESOME on me! It took about 1/2 months to actually fully clear my skin. And my skin looked the best it's ever been. Everyone is different though so it may work differently for you. Only downside is that you shouldnt be on a antibacterial medicine for a long time bc it's not good to be on for years so that's why I had to quit using it plus it got kinda expensive /: I got great results though while using it.

Christie B thank you for the response. I want to take them so I might take the risk.

I was taking minocycline for peri dermatitis..it worked the exact same as the tetracycline for me, only didn't have as harsh of sun sensitivity with it (a plus since I'm very fair skinned). I love the results, definitely helps clear up anything on my face for the time being.

I was on minocycline for about six months in 2012 but I suffered sun sensitivity and had to stop (I'd had skin cancer twice at that point; four times as of this year so I'm high risk).
I have never had severe acne; mostly I just get milia and blackheads. However in 2012 I started getting some cystic acne after a prolonged about of bacterial pneumonia, and I was prescribed minocycline to clear it. It didn't seem to help, even after six months, and with the side effects (nausea, sun burn) my doctor and I discontinued treatment. I found that changing birth control cleared the cysts, so now I'm just stuck with trying to get rid of my original problems.
If you do take this medicine and you find yourself feeling nauseated, try taking it with a meal (my prescription was with/without food but on an empty stomach it made me ill). Be vigilant about reducing UV exposure. Also be aware that it can cause changes in skin and eye color (e.g. jaundice) with prolonged use, and can be a sign of liver damage. It can also give a greyish tinge to your teeth.
