Sigma brushes are a good mid-range price brush I think. Their essntial kit will give you a good idea of what you might need to get started, though your needs may vary a bit. They have a myriad of shapes and sizes and you can get a decent set for not too much (about 10-15 dollars a brush) and they ship to the UK. There are some value brands that have good reviews like Morphe and BH cosmetics. I wouldn't do a big set, because Sandra C is right you always sacrifice quality for quantity. You end up with a couple of brushes that just kind of suck in those big set usually. And as I say everyones idea of essential may not mesh with your actual needs. A lot of this depends on your indivudual preferences, face size and shape etc. I'd say everyone needs a brush to apply foundation, a synthetic brush for concealer, a flat top dual fibre stiple brush for blending foundation (or you could do a beauty blender, but I think they waste product and take too long to use) a couple of powder brushes, a big fluffy one for all over and a medium or small one for highlighting/bronze/blush and detail work. For eyes you will need an angled liner, (my favorite is designed for brows and has a spoolie on the end. It's great because it a very fine eyeline as well as doubling as a brow brush) a small shadow, or shader and a medium shadow brush are necssisties. A big shadow brush is helpful for sweeping the whole eye area. I like an angled brush for working in my "crease", but that is partly because I have a hooded lid. I basically have no crease so I don't use a crease brush, but many people consider them necessities. Blending brushes are key. A small blender for doing smokey eye is nice, one that's relatively stiff and barrel-shaped but narrow as well, (sometimes called a pencil brush) and a big one for blending out shadow is key (like the Mac 217 Sandra mentioned.) Lip brushes aren't an absolute necessity since a lot of lip product can be applied without a brush, but I've found them handy and they are usually really cheap.

I'm sure the sigma essential kits have all of these brushes ^ I have the make me cool set and I love it! The little cup it comes in is really handy for travelling too. In the UK you can get them on certain websites, my set was definitely less that £100 for 12 brushes.

I don't like Real Techniques... But good brushes for your budgets I would recommend BH Cosmetics, Sephora (not all of them though but I like the Pro ones), and Coastal Scents
