I really want my hair this dark purple but I'm not sure if I would have to bleach it and go to a hairstylist or if I could just do it myself. I don't have much experience with this so opinions will be very helpful!!

I think bleaching is the only way to get it to show up that shade of purple, if you were to put it on over dark hair it'd only leave a tint in the sun. You could do it yourself but if you aren't experienced with bleach then I'd recommend your hairdresser.

I was hoping I could dye it without bleaching it but that is probably the only way to get the shade I want. Thank you for helping :)

The good thing is that you'd only have to bleach to an orange shade of some kind so one bleach would be sufficient to get it to the purple you'd like :)

DON't BLEACH IT! I dyed my hair dark purple before. I did it at home although if you go to a salon they could put in some low lights to accent the purple. But bleaching your hair will just turn your hair yellow and you have to wait a week before you can dye it again.

Jenna R. is not entirely correct. I had to bleach my hair to dye my hair purple/pink and less than a half hour of the hair dresser applying the bleach, the hair dye was in my hair. I would recommend going to a salon to do this.

Jenna, sorry to disagree but you're incorrect about the bleaching, you can dye your hair after bleaching as long as all the bleach has been washed out with shampoo. And it doesn't always turn yellow. Lol.

I know with bleach you have to be careful but I have seen the dye applied to the hair after the bleach was washed out.

Thank you to each of you for your advice :) I'm thinking of just going to a salon so I will have less worry about the outcome.

No, you definitely do not have to wait at all. Just as long as the bleach is rinsed out completely. It's more for the health of the hair if anything. Besides that, purple dyes are veggie dyes which are almost always chemical free, and they are basically just conditioner with pigment in it. (Splat, wella, ion and most salon brands like Evelyn Charles or loreal excluded) manic panic, special effects, punky colors, directs etc.are a few options that are basically just a deep conditioner that colors. And bleaching can turn hair yellow/orange if there's any red tones to the hair. But all you do is tone that to get rid of the orange/yellow. Which purple dye is what would be used in a toner, so you'd be killing two birds with one stone, dying and toning all at once.

You'll definitely have to bleach lighter, not bleach blonde but definitely lighter. Probably a medium-dark dirty blonde or even a little darker would do.

Then I'd suggest special effects' deep purple. It's a really pretty deep plum color and is very similar to your picture. The darker your hair is to start the darker the purple will be (black-dark browns will just be a tint, and anything lighter gives it a bit more intense vibrant results) so keep that in mind, if you bleach your hair white blonde it likely will not be a dark purple.
