so can I use purple shampoo to the roots to tone them down or do I have to get a darker hair dye and dye the roots? my hair is too damaged so I don't want to use another dye on it :(

I don't think purple Shampoo will help too much at all if they're as brassy as you're saying they are, I think the best thing you could do would be to dye it.

Purple shampoo might help a little, but it isn't a stand-in for a toner. Talk to the employees at your local beauty supply and see what they suggest.
I know I ended up with hot roots when I bleached my hair blonde, and I ended up using purple hair dye mixed with conditioner to get rid of the brassiness. I tried toner first, but it didn't take on my hair. Everyone's hair is different, so definitely check in with a professional (most times beauty shop employees are cosmetologists too).

Purple shampoo might do it, but you'd end up doing it quite a few times.
I'd suggest getting a purpley blue veggie dye (my favorite for this is manic panic ultra violet but any blue purple veggie dye will do) mix with conditioner, I usually do a 1dye:2conditioner ratio when my hair is really orangey yellow but a 1dye:4conditioner ratio should do it in most cases. It might leave a bit of a pastel purple, but it washes out in 1 or 2 washes but it means it toned well.

Plus it's deep conditioning at the same time rather than damage :) I never use proper toner that uses developer. I always just use this and it works just fine. I have dark auburn brown naturally so it always goes orange when I bleach my roots and this is the best way for my hair.

I agree with Alyx about getting one with a blue based purple if you can find one. If you're wanting a good blue based purple shampoo the only one I've been able to find is made from Avon and is about 5$ a bottle. Worth it though because they're big bottles.

Purple shampoo will not help, the color was unable to lift your natural color light enough. I think you should bite the bullet and go to a reputable salon for a color correction, especially since your hair is damaged.
