Hi ladies! I turn 18 in 6 months and I would love to get my first tattoo on my birthday for a birthday present to myself. and I DO understand that a tattoo is permanent and will be on my body forever and I don't HAVE to get it on my 18th birthday but that's still something I personally would like to do and I'd like to think of something now so I can have plenty of time to think it over. I know a lot of you have tattoos on here and I was curious, how did you choose what you wanted?.have you thought about what if you wanted a different tattoo years later in the same spot you already have one in? cause that's what I'm mostly afraid of! I'm afraid of getting a tattoo on a certain spot and wanting to get something else in that same spot later on in life. I have a million ideas on what I would want to get, some with meaning and some without, and I'm just very indecisive. any suggestions?

My suggestion is make sure whatever you is something that has some sort of longevity to it and be careful wear you put it be conscious of the changes that happen to your body as you age make sure you put in a place that is least likely to sag droop or stretch.

Well it depends if your kinda girly you could go for like a humming bird or a flower but if your like a emo you might go for like a quote or something but I personally would get a finger tattoo of a feather a mustache or shhh

I would get a tattoo that means something, otherwise I think it's pointless but that's just my opinion

Make sure its a place you can hide it(some places don't take you if you have visible tattoos for work). as marjorie say make sure its a place that won't droop or stretch. make it something that means a lot to you. maybe a quote or an animal that reminds you to be for example strong-tiger, loyal-wolf, kind-dove etc..

I got mine 2 days after my 18th birthday, and I went straight for a geometric design on my forearm, to be honest I didn't really think a lot about what I wanted to get, I just knew when I seen it, if that makes sense, and 6 months on, I still am absolutely in love with it, also pain wise, where I got it didn't hurt whatsoever, and I am the worst person when it comes to pain! (there's a photo on my profile if you want to have a look at the placement) good luck, overall, it's really whatever your happy with, and at the end of the day, it's your body and nobody else's!

I went for a pretty easy tattoo for my first, because honestly unless you've been saving for awhile you won't be able to afford to get something complex from a reputable artist. I'd personally not get anything you see on Pinterest/something everyone is doing. At the end of the day tattoos aren't to impress others because you're sure as hell are going to get judged. Finger tattoos generally don't last. I'd also recommend getting it in an area that isn't very visible as a lot of employers prefer you to cover them up.

All I'm going to say is get what makes you happy and don't think your tattoo needs to have some deep, symbolic meaning 😊 it's yours, not anyone else's

I like my ink to symbolize something meaningful...my first tat is a butterfly that I had custom designed and not from a book or wall of designs. I wanted it to represent my daughter who was six months old at the time. I noticed she was always in awe over butterflys so that influenced my choice of design. She's 14 now and she still loves butterflys...she even sketches them in her free time. I have 2 other kids and since their personalities are always evolving I have yet to figure out what my next three tats should look like. I'm still trying to figure out a white tat for my ring finger. There truly isnt a best spot to put a tat on the body...your skin is going sag/droop/stretch as you age so location isnt a big deal in my opinion. And as far as employers go...with the advances made in makeup its so easy to find coverup to render them nonexistent on the skin. Most importantly please go to a reputable and clean shop.

A lot of the tattoos I got when I was younger (18 to about 23) I regret. I shouldn't say regret, just wish they went there. they have no meaning and are lacking detail and though (like scissors with a "cut here" line in my wrist...WHO DOES THAT?!?! apparently I do). the tattoos I got when I got a little older are the ones that I hold near and dear to my heart. they all have meaning and are there for a reason. I ended up covering a few up, and reworking others. I also found so great tattoo artists and have traveled to go to tattoo conventions to get work by more well known artists. do your research and find someone yiu feel comfortable with. I always like to give my idea to the artist and let them run with it. Don't think to hard about it, tattoos are permanent but you can always cover it Yuri p with something else down the road :-)

I agree with Lauren 110% I'm just going to add don't worry about wanting a different one in a spot that you've already inked up. You have your entire body as a open canvas. I have many and a few were definitely not the best ideas (I blame Mr.Jack Daniels and my inability to say no to him lol) but I love them, they bring back fun and hilarious memories😉💋

I think a tattoo should have meaning. I didn't get mine till I was in my thirties, but I drew up what I wanted, I put it in a place I never show because of the work I do. I think you just have to give it time, it'll come to you.

I agree with gypsy. I'm not quite 18 yet, but I have 6 tattoos planned (and cash going towards it) and some having meaning, but a couple don't. I just really love them and want them to be a part of me.

Why regret something you once wanted? My sister has the Cheshire cats smile from alice in wonderland on her upper back, and my grandmother hates it And always goes "when you get to my age you're going to hate that" and she gets really down on it. She's 23, had it for a year and is already going "what if I don't want it in 20 years" and I just tell her you wanted it so much you saved up for years and went to a big tattoo artist and paid a ton. You wanted it and worked hard to get it. Why regret it? And she agrees. She loves it so much, but is so worried she won't when she's older. But she loves it now and will for a long time and maybe when it's droopy and she's 80 she might not love it as much but if she goes 40+ years loving it then who cares about the 10 or so years that she doesn't like it as much. But I don't know, that's just my opinion. If at some point you wanted it so badly you wanted it on your skin forever, than you shouldn't regret it.

First of all, I didn't read all.the answers, but I'll share my experience with you!
I got my first (and still only one) tattoo when I turned 18. a friend of mine once draw it on my back on a party night with a a black pen. it was a small tribal of an elephant (yeah I know weird, but I love elephants).
so I decided that I wanted it as a real tattoo. But I was afraid I would regret it so I placed the picture of it in my mirror and decided that if I was looking at it for 6 months and still loving it I would get it!!
it's now been 10 years and I still love it :)

Mine was a gypsy. I d always been obsessed with gypsies, tarot, anything to do with occultism. My entire left arm is tarot and afterlife themed (my right is going to be my character arm since I'm a huge anime/comic nerd)
I don't think every tattoo has to be super sentimental. It's all art. Make sure you love it though, and make sure it won't affect any career opportunities in the future. I'm a hairdresser and mua so I can tattoo whatever I want haha. Just be picky, especially about the artist

And NEVER give a damn about what other people will think of your choice. YOU have to love it, no one else

Oh I agree with Kendall on that!!
