You do not want to use a facial scrub on melasma. It only makes it much worse. Causes great inflammation.

What about a non abrasive liquid style exfoliant like something with bha? I don't know if that would be too irritating, just throwing it out there. I'm curious to know.

Nope. BHA won't do anything to combat it. If anything it will just create further irritation. To reduce it hormonal birth control needs to be avoided and year round use of spf is a must (reapplying every two hours if outside) and avoiding direct sunlight. Also including ascorbic acid (vitamin c) in the form of a serum is vital as well. This stuff cannot be scrubbed away as there are three types of melasma ( epidermal, mixed and dermal). Dermal is the one that reaches deep into the skin hence the reason why I say this cannot be scrubbed away. You want to stay away from items that could possible cause further irritation because it can result in either irritant contact dermatitis or allergic contact dermatitis. The daily sunscreen use combined with vitamin c serum will definitely inhibit further pigment production (melasma) but if you aren't sticking with it religiously then its all being done in vain and you're just wasting money. I know this has been your battle for awhile Donna but hang in and don't give up...the results aren't going to happen overnight unfortunately. xxx
