I suggest cutting off as much as you can and start treating your hair nicely. Limit your blowdrying and straightening, and always use a heat protectant when you use heat. Also limit the amount of bleaching and coloring you do. Don't brush your hair while it's wet; use a wide-toothed comb instead. And get a good deep conditioner-- you can find them at many price points. My favorite is Palmer's Coconut Protein Pack, which is only $1.50 and really helps bring moisture back into your hair. I also use a small amount argan oil on my ends after I wash/co-wash. If you're using clarifying shampoos, try switching to a more moisturizing formula, maybe even a sulfate-free one, and only wash when you have to. Just try to be as nice and gentle to your hair as you can and eventually you will see it get back to a healthy state.

There's no way to repair split ends, so you should get a fresh hair cut to snip away as much damage as possible. If you're trying to reconstruct your hair, the JOICO K-Pak line has proteins in it to help with that. Use a leave-in conditioner daily to give your hair moisture. I agree with Courtney B. in reducing your heat styling as much as possible.

Thank you guys! But what if it's like too much to cut off?

Kat, just cut off as much as you can stand to lose and trim it as often as you can until you've gotten rid of all of the badly damaged hair. It'll be rough for a while, but in the long run you'll have healthy hair. You may want to go see a hairstylist and see if you've reached the point of no return, in which case you'd need to cut, or if your hair is still salvageable.

Cut off as much as you can bear to part with. It'll be worth it in the end! There's no use in keeping hair that is so damaged beyond repair. It's going to be more work to maintain dry hair and split ends. It's not super common but sometimes split ends can continue to split higher and higher up the strand and your hair will continue to break off, but this time they'll be higher up the strand which leaves you with a shorter strand of hair. So instead of waiting for your chemical haircut, just go in for a real one! As long as you keep your hair moisturized and scalp in healthy condition, your hair should continue to grow so you can just maintain it.

Cut off as much as possible, but leave enough to put in extensions.

Do not put extensions into severely damaged hair... It may not be able to support the extra weight... And hair breaking off is no good

This might sound disgusting but do the mayo treatment. I do it on my hair at least 3 times a month. I have done everything in the book to my hair, and it is now very damaged. I have thickish hair so i do a little more than 1/2 of a cup of mayo. Pour a little bit of your shampoo in it, mix it very well. Then lather your hair with it. Especially your ends. Put plastic wrap or a shower cap over it for 25 to 45 minutes. Then wash it out really well. It'll bring lots of moisture to your hair. The smell does go away!!! You just need to wash your hair really well after.
