Practice practice practice practice. Start out with learning how to paint your nails without making a mess (cutepolish just made a video about this) then I would do simple things like using striping tape or polka dots. Use YouTube, it was my teacher when I was a beginner.

Practice! Techniques readily available on YouTube and pintrest have some too.
And also, discover what will make it easier for you to complete a look, tools, colours etc. :)

Practice... Such a creative answer haha! But I started of with stripes, dots, flowers, checkers, etc. Now I do more complicated things and sometimes I try even harder thigns. But I am personally not a big fan of the extrme details. I think it is pretty and stuff, but after a week or so you will remove it again... Plus, J am a huge fan if the simplicity the looks of people. I have a very casual comfy style with a hint of girly... Ooohh, oops... I just started to talk randomly... What was the question again? Oooh yeah! Nails. Practice.
