Hello! I'm in the awkward stage between pixie and shoulder length which I'm currently trying to pass off as a cute bob. Color is a medium auburn, natural.
I've been wanting to do one of these for a while now:

and I'm wondering if anyone has any tips on how to achieve the "ashy" pastel look. I don't want the bubblegum eye-popping color (have done it before!) but am looking for something more, well, depressing and boring (like me, now that I'm older!) :)
Any advice?

Well for starters to achieve the vibrancy of a pastel color you'll have to bleach your hair. Secondly for the color itself, I know diluting colors with a white conditioner helps with achieving a pastel look. Product wise I know that Ion Color Brilliance has a small line of pastel dyes and I know that Manic Panic sells a tub of pastelizer (which is meant to tone down the brightness of a color to a more vibrant color ).

Bleach, may take some time to get to palest yellow, then tone, I recommend pravana pastels... they last. But are a pro line.

Pravana does a clear and silver. I mix touches of color into those.

I was going to try pravana a couple years ago for the "magenta" I had but chose something more readily available to me :( After some intense googling and your comments I think I can figure it out. If I go through with it I'll post pics later on. Thanks a lot. <3.
