I would say you have to do some teasing on top of your head before tying your hair up in the pony tail.

I think you need to back comb the ponytail at the elastic a bit to get that volume. You will also want to spray some hairspray in, Kenra's Working Spray is awesome for this kind of thing. And then I would use a finishing spray when all done to help hold the look.
