Hey ladies, I'm hoping to get some advice from all you makeup artists out there. I recently decided to put makeup artistry school on hold for awhile to go to school to become a registered dietitian. Makeup is my passion and it bums me out to put it on hold but I still want to pursue it while im in school :) So my question is, how can I become a self taught makeup artist? Any tips are appreciated!

My advice is to just keep up to date with trends, different techniques, new products and their uses, practice applying makeup on others, etc. I think the biggest thing is just staying up to date with everything :)

I would say the best thing is to get text books/beauty books. I'm in a mud class and the text book is great and can be found online and I would also pick up some books by people like Kevin aucoin & bobbi brown :)

^ that too. slipped my mind somehow. I have both of Kevyn's books and one of Bobbi's and they are all very helpful books to have on hand

Agree with Brittany and Caitlin. Practice on your own and also try on friends and relatives too. Make sure you invest in the good books as well so the tips will help you better the skills. The Bobbi brown book is good and buy it online since its cheaper too. Watch videos and use the proper brushes too. ELF and Sonia have good starter brushes

In january time im going to be applying for a makeup course, obviously if i find the right one for me. I dont think i really need to do one but i just knows it makes it easier to get jobs when you have a certificate under your belt

You dont have to go to school to become a makeup artist. Try assisting artist on shoots to get experience. Also like others said, keep up to date on trends, watch youtube videos, and practice!

practice practice practice! get books from the library join beauty sites

I, myself, is self-taught. I started with BObbi Browns Teenage Beauty - it's the foundation to makeup and then I moved on to her other books and Kevin Acoin

Wow I'm self taught and I didn't have social media when I started I read books and lots of practice on different faces and looks then I would ask people that were aspiring actresses if they would like there makeup done for there gigs and just keep pushing and learn as you go with the art.there is know wrong way of doing a certain look every artist does what's best for them and if your gonna read books of other artist think like them it was all fresh ideas and Kevin A.didn't go to school he was self taught too.Get inspired.

Thanks for all the tips Ladies. For ME, I feel as if going to a MUA school is essential. I'm a licensed Esthetician and before I went to school for it I thought I knew so much about skin and yada yada but I realized I really didn't once I went through the schooling. This is how I feel with makeup artistry too (I think I know things but I really don't lol). I've also been watching YouTube gurus since I was in middle school and although I LOVE them (i'm seriously addicted) I feel as if they're not really helping me that much. Maybe I'm not utilizing them the right way? :/

I learnt everything I know from my moms old text book and Kevyn aucoin books. I later went to aesthetics school and learnt a few new things but the majority of my knowledge of skin and beauty was learnt before I was 16.

I agree with Kaleia. I definitely suggest enrolling yourself in a makeup school. Obviously there is a lot you learn just be experiences, but it's tough to get jobs if you haven't gone to school for it. & in no way am I saying its impossible. I've just seen makeup artists who have no idea what they're doing. Some that are super unhygienic, too. That's a HUGE no no. Before going to makeup school I thought I knew all there was to know, but I was so wrong. I learned a lottt. You also get taught set etiquette. Also extremely important. Obviously it's your call, but I would recommend it. Also, MAC always has courses. There's always room for learning more about the career you want to pursue
