What's the difference between box dye and the dye at the salons?

Box dye has harsh ingredients. Think of how long the shelf life is. Salon dye is less harsh ingredients and are better for your hair.

There's probably a couple reasons why she said that. She probably thinks box dyes are of poorer quality (I don't know if they are) and also when you buy box dyes, you are more than likely going to dye your own hair. And she again is assuming a professional can do a better job. Which I do believe.

If you go to Salon stores you can buy bottles, tubes or pumps of the stuff the use in the hairdressers. You're really paying for the experience an knowledge though when a professional does it.

I'm in my 6th month of cosmetology school and we're in the Hair coloring chapter lol...box dye are harsher on your hair...it's A LOT to coloring hair and it depends on the health of that persons hair...box dyes can't tell whether your hair is porous or has enough elasticity to undergo hair coloring...I suggest if you do decide to purchase box dyes STRAND TEST first...or just use a semi permanent...also I wouldn't recommend purchasing the same products professionals use because they do not come with instructions as they are for "professional use only"...hope this helps!

Box dye is harder on your hair then salon dye. Also when you use box dye you don't know which developer they are putting in the box (volume 10-40). It's just better control if you get it done in a salon then trying to do it at home.

Even Salon dyes are not created equally. I only use Pravana, for example.
