I don't see anything wrong with wearing black to a wedding as long as it doesn't look gothic or like a funeral dress. Just whatever you do don't wear white! That's only for the bride.

Is it going to be soon (weather)? reception outdoors or indoors? do they specified how formal? at what time will it be held (noon, afternoon, night)??

I wear black cocktail dresses to weddings all the time. It's timeless and simple. Black pencil skirts are also wonderful with a silk blouse. If you are outdoors in a casual setting, a floral dress would be nice or dress capris with heels and a bit of jewelry to shine. Have fun!

Cocktail dresses are usually good but it depends on the theme of the wedding - after you know the theme n colors that should help make your decision easier - if you are unsure look at the invitations they are usually a good indicator.

Lara, the wedding is on Saturday. At night, and it's indoors

Sorry for replying so late (finals)
I think that something like Janelle posted is right if it is cocktail but if it is etiquette, long dress is a must! a satin finish looks devine and almost any color is appropiate, just avoid white. I think an emerald green or a ruby red would look very good on you :) don't forget a pashmina (AC)

My wedding was black and white...all of my bridesmaids and many of my guests wore black dresses. I don't think there's anything wrong with wearing black to a wedding, it's classy and classic.
