You could always use a color remover (but those kinda scare me lol) the thing with red is that it fades VERY fast and you wouldn't want to lighten it too much or you would end up with orange hair in a few weeks. I would suggest just using a level 20 developer if you are doing it yourself.

Color will not.lift color so yes, your going to have to lighten it. I'm not familiar with store bought color removers though. if you really need to do this yourself (although I would suggest a professional, especially when lightening hair as dark as yours) then try a mixture of equal parts shampoo, bleach and 30 volume developer. apply it to your hair and try to keep away ffrom any new growth you may have. keep working it thru (heat and movement help it to.process faster). all you really want to.do.is lift it a shade or two. nothing too light. but becareful with this. you could end up messing it up and having to go to a salon, where you'll probably be charged a lot more to fix a mistake then you would have been to just do the color.
