I love Chai Total Protect and Iron Guard. Even so, I limit flat iron temp and use. It's a 10 Leave in Conditioner is great and Redken 22 Hot Sets (for me) is perfect for getting killer curls that last.

You'll definitely want to get a heat protectant.
Either a balm you can put into wet hair to blow dry or a spray you spray on dry hair and let dry before using a flat iron or curler.
It'll depend what tools you want to use.
I'd also recommend getting a deep conditioning treatment to use once a week as well to help curb damage.
I always buy these kinda products from a salon like Chatters, but if you don't have that money to spend on products then just check the hair care aisle at your local drug store!

You protect the hair by using a heat protectant. all the brands mentioned above have great ones. redkin, tresseme and its a 10 make good ones. my fave is Paul Mitchell super skinny. it's a protectant and a straightening serum.

I have used just about every heat protecter out there from Garnier, Tressemme, Chi, Got 2 B, Suave, and the list goes on; and Its a 10 leaves my hair looking less damaged and makes it look healthy and smell good too. I got a free sample at Ulta. Its expensive but I won't use anything else now.
