Basically it's swishing oil (like coconut oil or virgin sesame oil) around in your mouth to detox any bacteria or toxins in your mouth and can clear up any congestion. the hard part is you have to do it for 5-20 min for it to work.

It's an ancient medicinal practice under Ayurvedic Medicine that involves the use of oils to pull toxins from the body. Every morning, before doing anything. The practice involves "swishing" oil in your mouth until it turns foamy and white. With prolonged use (along with proper self care) it will rebalance the body so you'll be functioning at an optimal level. I'll list some of the benefits in case you're interested :)
-extra energy
-hormonal balance
-improved digestion
-supple, healthy skin
-better moods
the list goes on! I hope this helped :)

Here's a pretty straight to the point definition of it.

Oil pulling or oil swishing is a folk remedy where oil is "swished"(Kavala Graha) or "held"(Snehan/Snigda Gandoosha) in the mouth.
Practitioners of oil pulling claim it is capable of improving oral and systemic health, including a benefit in conditions such as headaches, migraines, diabetes mellitus, asthma, and acne, as well as whitening teeth. Its promoters claim it works by pulling out toxins, which are known as ama in Ayurvedic medicine, and thereby reducing inflammation.

And yes, Beautylish does have an article on Oil Pulling:

I was wondering thr same thing Anery. How does an oil pull out toxins?

I think this sounds really cool though if it works. I'm kind of tempted to try it

Actually, I spoke to a medical professional about it - especially since it sounds so silly.
His response was just to drink a lot of water and consume a lot of fiber. The traditional way of detoxifying yourself.

My boyfriends older sister does this with coconut oil, I felt the same way when she came over one day and was walking around with it in her mouth forever but her teeth are so white. Don't know if it's from this but yeah, there are people that do this haha :)

In Ayurveda there are three body constitutions; Vata, Pitta, and Kapha...all which have very different qualities. Oil pulling using the appropriate oils for the constitution (or dosha) will balance that person and allow the body to function as well as it can. Evidence od Ama (as kitty mentioned above is a toxin produced by the body) is usually found on the tongue and the oil absorbs that as well. Ama comes from any imbalance from the digestive system, where all disease starts. By clearing ama you're also allowing your body to readjust itself without incorporating the toxins!

I tried to explain it the best I can, and it probably sounds wacky to you guys because we've all grown up in a world dominated by allopathic ideals. I'm currently studying to be a licensed Ayurvedic practioner and it was really difficult grasping a lot of these ancient concepts :) I hope something I said here helped!

I think the concept is in the same way toxins build up on the back of your tongue. It "pulls" the toxins out of your body. Your mouth is probably the fullest part of your body with them, since it's most exposed to outside toxins. I know quite a few people who swear by oil pulling, saying it's improved their overall mouth health and made them feel better all around, and whitened their teeth. My friends dentist actually recommended it for her when she had a cavity but didn't have health care coverage, he said that oil pulling *can* help overall mouth health, and can lessen the chance of the cavity getting worse. She did it until she got her health care worked out, and she said it made her mouth feel cleaner and healthier, but she didn't notice a difference that mouthwash didn't do.

You are right anupa..now it seems more practical about overall mouth health fact as alyx said. this is acceptable since we are swishing in the mouth it must be helping in removing toxins from mouth. but that earlier benifits I.e keeps skin healthy n et. c seems out of the way so I asked further. thnx for clearing my queries. :)

Well, with less toxins in the body, the less they'll interfere with clear skin, hormones, etc. it's like keeping your overall health up, your skin shows it. Like when you have liver problems, your undereye circles become darker. So take away the problems, and the under eye circles will improve. So yes, I'm sure a lot of people who have quite a bit of toxin built up will see improvement of skin or things like that. Just coming from what I know about the human body, not fact.

No problem :) Its always important to ask questions when it relates to the body :) I'm glad I was able to help

I think part of the benefit of ancient/folk remedies is due to the placebo effect. Medically, oil pulling does nothing, but practitioners believe it does and that will leave them feeling a little better. It is an interesting psychological phenomenon, and is one control for pharmaceutical tests.
