So the other day a makeup artist told me that he contours with a darker foundation.
I was wondering if using a darker foundation is okay?
If not, what should I use to contour?
I don't want crazy expensive either, I'm looking for no more than $30.

If their is a foundation you love, use it but two or three shades darker. NYC has a good one I think.

I used loreals true match powder in cocoa if I use powder to contour and for a cream contour I use maybelline a fit me stick in 355 coconut. And those are both drugstore and work fine

I love the senna cosmetics contour cream kit. It's 48$ but it's perfect. I have a video where you can see how good it works. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bwL4HUIvtts.

You can use a darker foundation, but go for a cool-toned one as opposed to a warm-toned one.
NYX also makes a blush shade called "taupe" that is the perfect cool-toned brown to contour with.
Either option will work just fine - just like I said, go for a cooler tone as contouring is about creating the illusion of shadows. (And shadows aren't orange.) :)
