What I do is I whip my head back and forth. I know that sounds crazy but it really works to loosen up my curls and make them look more like waves!

Don't brush them, but if you have a wide-tooth comb you could gently go through with that. That's what I do! I also like to do them the night before and sleep on it.

You could get some hair oil on your hands and gently tug on the curls until they become more loose.
