Ladies I want to get my nails done but can't decide on what to get. They need to be durable because with my job my hands are always doing something. Acrylics or gels??

Gel is in the long run better for your nails. As a nurse, I'm not allowed to have acrylic due to infection prevention, but do gel as an alternative. I'm constantly waking my hands and regular manicures were pointless. I like the results-they look new for two weeks. But just like anything, moderation is key. I got gel nails back to back for a few months and noticed my nails had become a little thinner. They didn't take long to bounce back-esp in comparison to acrylic. Overall, I think gel is the better choice.

Thanks for the suggestions. It's been awhile since I've gotten my nails done. I really didn't like acrylic due to the condition of my nails afterwards. For some reason my nails now seem to break before they get a decent length. When my nails were long I would do fiberglass or silk wraps on the tips.

Gel is much better :) looks the same as when you got them done two weeks later :)

I use gelish. It's way better on my nails unless I peel the polish then they're trashed. My nails grow better but still break after a while. I just started taking a nail vitamin hope it helps!! I would say buying your own kit is pricey but worth it cuz then you can repair if needed. I got my lamp off of amazon for $28!! Can't beat that!

I wear mine constantly but do take one day break every other time. I've also noticed that using acetone to remove gel over dries my nails and they break faster. I use the special gel remover and it's way more moisturizing.

I've had both. I used acrylics for years before switching to gels and I would never go back. gels last way longer and do not lift like acrylics

I love my gels! After getting gels for the first time I never went back to acrylic again!

As a nail tech I would advise gel nails.

Acrylics will change colour (like turn yellow if you are a smoker - that's if you get white or clear) and I've even noticed that they will get tiny hair line cracks in them. Gel is more flexible as well as they don't change colour.

Are gel nails just the polish? or is it an addition to your nails Like acrylic just a different material? I like doing my own polish design, but want sturdier nails?
btw, sorry if its impolite to ask a question within someone elses post...

@Gillyana they are more sturdier than regular polish.. nail won't break if you do them right.. also they're not as hard like acrylic but thicker thin regular polish.

Gel nails can just be the polish! You can just put the gel and polish on your nails but you can also use false tips! Like acrylics :) I usually get the false tips but gel on natural nails looks super cute too!

I want tips with a gel overlay. I've got plenty of polish of my own so I'd paint them myself. The main reason I want them is to give my nails a little length.

That's what I would want as well, I enjoy doing my own polish and designs. my nails just won't grow and break easily. I was thinking gel would help with that and also give me more surface to work with so I can make awesome designs. I think I might actually try the gels, see what I can do...thanks for answering my questions :)
