Best way to get perfect curls!

Hey so my hair is really thick and impossible to keep in really good curls unless it overnight but when I do tag curls, I look like Shirley temple😕 so I want to hear your guys opinions on what has worked best for you to get perfect curls. Btw I don't have any fancy special tools.

I do pin curls mostly. but I love my curling wand. you can see pics of my curls ob my profile. I too have super thick hair, and very long.
