What's the difference between a lipstick, lip pencil, and lip tar?
Any good Dark Purple/Violet Lipsticks?

A lip pencil is used to outline your lips to prevent your lipstick from feathering outside your lip line. You can also fill in your lips with the lip pencil, that's what I usually do just to keep it consistent. Its always best to keep it sharpened so the lines arent a mess. Lipstick is a lip product that, well, comes in a stick. It can be applied directly from the tube. Usually I go without the lip pencil underneath, but when I rock a red lip I always apply the lip pencil underneath. Again, it just helps keep the lipstick in place. Finally, a lip tar is a liquid lipstick so to speak. It's a phenomenal product by OCC cosmetics that comes in a tube with a little lip brush for application. With this, you squeeze out a teeny tiny dot (seriously, you DO NOT need much product- a little goes an outrageously long way) and use the lip brush to transfer to product to your lips. It's literally like you're painting with makeup.
Sadly (for me, anyway), one of my favorite dark purple lipsticks is no longer cruelty free, but I'm sure wet n wild or nyx carries a great purple lipstick! I know limecrime carries a violet shade, and OCC certainly has many lip tars available. If you can't find the right shade, you could always purchase a couple of lip tars and mix them together. (Oh yeah, you can mix those bad boys up!)
I hope I helped, and I wish you luck on finding that perfect shade! :)

A lip tar is a product by Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics. It's a highly pigmented liquid lipstick.
A lip pencil, or lip liner, can act as a primer to help the longevity and pigmentation of your lipstick. It can also prevent the lipstick from smudging or sliding throughout the day. This is especially important for very bright lipsticks; the last thing you want is a red ring around your mouth by the end of the day.
Here are some good berry/purple lipsticks: http://bit.ly/1dQF83m
