What eyeliner brand/type do you recommend? I have never used any before and want to give it a try :)

I think it is all personal preference, really. Honestly I think I used pencil when I started wearing makeup 12 years ago, but now I wouldn't know what to do with it! I have been wearing a cat eye everyday since I started wearing makeup, so I personally go between favoring gel and liquid eyeliners. The definitely take practice and getting used to though. I found an article here on beautylish that is a little guide to using liquid liners http://www.beautylish.com/a/vcsxa/liquid-liner-brushes but I actually started these techniques from most difficult first to trying the easier methods more recently. I personally like using MAC's fluidline gel eyeliner with an angled brush. Its not the best liner, but it is what works for me! If I'm using a liquid I have been using Maybelline Ultra Liner. That one is harder to use and it seems more like a "love it or hate it," item.
Its really just trial and error and figuring out what is most comfortable for you!

pencil is the easiest and the newer gel formula pencils are smooth and easy to use. I like Nuance by Salma Hayek for drugstore or Urban Decay 24/7 liners for higher end
