I know many artists & makeup lovers are against animal testing in cosmetics. However, many continue to use brushes made of animal hair. today you can find excellent quality synthetics at all price points that work well with both powder & cream products. just wanted to get a conversation started hear your thoughts I only use synthetics

A lot of animal hair brushes are made by simply brushing the animal and using the hair that falls out though

natural brushes are only for powder that seems like a waste of money but to each their own I guess

they also have to be replaced much sooner then synthetic brushes

unfortunately many animal hair brushes support the fur trade. which is kind of why I wanted to get this conversation started. elf which has always sold synthetics and still does in their studio line recently started selling horse hair brushes as well. here is an article I wrote for more info on why I use synthetics http://www.peta.org/living/beauty-and-personal-care/cruelty-free-makeup-brushes.aspx

some amazing vegan brushes are the Revolution line by Kevin James Bennett sold by Royal & Langnickle. I tend to stay away from animal hair brushes. I have a few but they were gifts from before I was vegan & I believe that animals shouldn't be killed for food or sport but once they are part of the supply chain, honor their lives/ beauty by giving pelt coats to say children in need (that's what I did with the fur coats my mother left me when she passed away.
Having said all of that, the folkowing companies have resumed testing on animals after vowing not to: estee lauder, avon, mary kay, aveda (yup) urban decay resumed animal testing but their customers were outraged so they no longer test on animals.

Sigma VMAX synthetic brushes are also really good and there are also some great vegan alternatives for personal use in the Arbonne brush line too (not really enough variety for pro use). I think any MUA would have to have some form of synthetic brush kit so many people are highly allergic to animal hair so you cant use traditional brushes without a reaction. I dont use solely synthetic brushes in my kit but i definitely think they need to be included xoxo

@Liza and Gin, I was pretty impressed with their Mr Bunny Range. The Synthetic Kabuki Brushes and Precision Brushes were the first brushes I tried from Sigma and I wasn't expecting them to be as good quality as they are because the price point is pretty low but I was really surprised and they have held up very nicely under constant use and cleaning.

@liza I really like it ... I like that they brought out a full set of synthetics even with a blending brush. I often find the range of synthetics on the market is so samey so I like that this is a parallel set that are just a synthetic version of the natural fibre set.
Much Love
xoxo

Well to be honest.. Natural hair is a much more green solution. Synthetic brushes use non renewable resources. Animals breed. I think the issue with turning to no renewable resources is a bigger problem. We are part of the food chain.. Top dogs. I love animals, but I also know that animals offer things to us that are better than petroleum based crap.

for any artists interested in seeing the Royal & Langnickel brushes, I did a review on my blog: http://makeupmattersbylnc.blogspot.com/2012/11/spotlight-royal-langnickel-revolution.html?m=1

@ Liza C. -- I've yet to find synthetic brushes that apply my shadow with the same intensity that a natural hair brush would.. Any recommendations? Also, how much did you spend on the Royal & Langnickel brushes you bought?
Dec 7, 2012
Liza G.
yes, I would def recommend the Royal & Langnickel because the hair isn't smooth its textured like real animal hair so makes it great for blending powder shadow Cozette brushes are great too. I ordered a bunch of singles & a set but got a pro discount so pricing wasn't bad at all
Dec 7, 2012
Liza G.
blending brush was like $6 , pencil brush $4.99 etc
