The first time I ever tried one I bought the not your mothers brand since I loved their dry shampoo so much buuuut I hated it!! Made my hair stiff and dry and I could barely brush through it. Does anyone know of any good ones?? Or is the whole heat protection spray thing a joke?

Try Redken iron shape or Sebastian trilliant good for blow drying straightening curling.. Put in wet or dry and brush through heat protection is very important you have to play around with certain sprays. Almost every professional line has one for curling try Kenra hotspray. Also there are protectant oils if you prefer! Go to a salon that sells products there are things you can get from drug stores but I've always said for salon quality hair use salon quality products your hair is so so so worth it.

The not your mothers heat protectant you used probably had some hold to it which means it's like hairspray and heat protectant in one. matrix has a blow dry creme which will protect from heat damage when blowdrying. they also have a heat protectant that doesn't cause your hair to be stiff and works wonderfully. bother are called sleek lisse. they are in a white bottle with orange labels.

I'm using Redken's SatinWear blow dry lotion. I prefer it over sprays bcuz it doesn't leave a funky residue. I run it thru wet hair and then blow dry and style as usual. I can really notice the difference when using it and when I don't. My hair is softer and shinier when I use it vs. not using it.

The miracle leave in works as heat protectant too if I'm not mistaken but I think they have one that is specifically heat protectant I'm not real sure.

Yes the good ones do work - to test spray it on your arm and try to blow dry your arm - you should notice that the heat is not penetrating the arm hairs that the spray was applied to - or spray some on hair - apply heat from the straightner and touch your hair - it should not be hot to the touch - the paul mitchell heat seal definitely does this I'm not sure about the others its the only thing I use.
