For someone just starting out as a freelance hair/makeup artist would you recommend having a contract???
If not, why?

I answered the same question on another thread. Yes, you want to do a contract. Your time is money and if someone flakes out on you for a gig you are out of money and time because that appointment could've potentially been set for someone else. My artist, at the beginning of our business client/relationship, had me sign a contract and put down a deposit for half the cost of service. If I didn't cancel 24 hours prior to the appointed day I lost my $$. If for any reason she had to cancel my deposit would be returned to me. Not only is a contract a great way to weed out flaky people it also shows that you are serious about your business and as a consumer I'm more opt to deal with artists who extend an contract over those who don't. Plus, it looks super professional. :)

Shelley W. - Thanks so much! I agree it is more professional. I just wasn't sure how legal it is if I just type it up myself and hand it to them.
