What do you all know about parabens in makeup? Please answer!!

Hello Rachel! Parabens are used widely in cosmetic industries to preserve cosmetics. It helps avoid mould and fungus. So it is considered a good thing.. But recent studies have shown that parabens disrupt the estrogen and hormone levels within women. Current research which is still under way is trying to find a scientific link to breast cancer and parabens. As the cancer cells are mimicking the parabens cells. If you want to know more your best bet is googling. I'm currently looking for alternative brands that are paraben free.

Parabens are used in most everything in the health/cosmetic industry, including things like toothpaste, face cream, body washes etc. besides which, if they're not using parabens to preserve the products, they're using something else. In my opinion, if something is found in toothpaste and doesn't kill us, it won't kill us if it's in cosmetics. Parabens have existed for a really long time, and only recently have people come to believe that they're bad for you.

Basically what Hannah said. The only actual link to parabens and cancer is the fact that breast cancer patients had parabens. There was no actual study, actually the study of breast cancer and parabens is unrelated. It was just noted that parabens were present, just like a lot of things were. The person who conducted the study did not look into it. It seems like someone blew up the idea and like I say. Humans are close relatives to monkeys so monkey see monkey do... So now it's all the hype.

That comment about "chemicals are always bad for you" is completely inaccurate and ridiculous. NaCl is a chemical. Do you know what it is? Salt. To make a statement like that when most chemicals are naturally occurring and harmless is completely ludicrous. And like Kitty said, the link between parabens and cancer is that they were both present, basically. A preservative will not kill you.

@Katrina That statement is ridiculous, water is a chemical... lol.

I don't think parabens aren't as simple as water and salt. Nobody knows for sure what that stuff is really made of so some people are just better safe than sorry and avoid things they're unsure of.

Well there are millions of things that are boosting cancer last decades like Antiperspirants, higher sun activity, weakening of the atmosphere, Genetically modified fruits and veggies (they are almost anywhere everywhere). Contamination of soil and water with harsh chemicals. And no mention about tons of preservatives on food and beverages. I think parabens is not something that we've to worry about if you are thinking of cancer.

I personally don't worry about parabens. I favor high end makeup. It's what I splurge on when I have the money. I just know good makeup is good makeup. When it comes to face wash I use honey and oils and such. I try not to use (or eat) stuff with ingredients I can't pronounce. I'm not a freak about it. I just honestly was a little disturbed by Katrina J being called ridiculous.

Yeah same with me, Veronica. I stick to high end makeup and organic veggies. I don't really eat anything packaged and preserved. I think sticking with high end makeup also has to do with drugstore foundations don't match up to my skin tone and I haven't found a drugstore eyeliner that actually last a long time without smudging on me.
