Will the live dye work on black.

I say not on black. It will cause a huge line of demarcation if you have any new growth. Once you go black it's really firkin tough to go back. I'd start with highlights. Maybe a soap cap. Bleach mixed with shampoo. The results won't be pretty especially if you used box dye so be ready to dye or tone afterward. Good luck!!
