How do you ACTUALLY exfoliate properly?

I exfoliate twice a week; at the end of the day before I go to bed I'll shower. First, I get a damp warm washcloth to rid of dead skin cells on the surface, rubbing in circular motions GENTLY. Then I take my exfoliator (it's by clean and clear) and rub that into my finger tips then massage into my face, avoiding the eye area and again using circular motions. I personally let it sit for awhile (I love the minty, tingle clean and clear products give to my skin!(: ) and wash my hair in the mean time. There's no science behind it that I know of, of letting it sit, so you can wash it off right away~ (unless the directions say different(: )
