I think if you use an inch curling wand you can achieve the desired look.

Curl away from your face and then lightly break apart the curls with your fingers. If you use a lightweight mousse I think itll help the curls hold more.

Use a wand to curl it then cool it off in the palm of your hand then pull the curl it'll make that wave.
