Is using sugar on your face too abrasive.

I think it's fine...most exfoliaters are made with sugar or salt anyway.

Depends on your skin type. I have oily skin and I use granulated sugar to exfoliate and it works perfectly. Definitely don't use it if you have sensitive skin.
