Will purple shampoo in dry hair hell tone and blonde?

I have my hair ombréd blonde at the end but it gets brassy fast.
I've read letting purple shampoo sit on dry hair for an hour will help tone it

Don't need to dry it on, just let it sit and keep checking and rubbing until most of the purple is out of the lather. A lot of people still continue to use a purple conditioner as well.
