I try to fill in the top line and bottom line to the shape of my arch first then when you've got the first half done how you like do the tail with small strokes. Hope that helps! I'm sure some of the other ladies on here will post better explanations but I find thats the easiest way for me :)

Brows, huh? They can be tricky sometimes. Since you did specify by saying you wanted to fill them in properly Jacqlyn's picture is perfect. Since you mentioned that your brows are very dark brown I would probably suggest using either "Dark Brown" or "Chocolate" nothing too dark. 1) when somebody has very dark/thick brows and when they add dark products to them they look really bold and not very flattering most of the time. What I do when I have somebody with thick/dark brows I just apply a very small amount of product to their brows just to add a bit of color so they won't look plain. I'll attach a picture of someone I follow on IG who does exactly what I'm trying to explain lol. She's using the shade "Chocolate to fill hers in.
I personally own the shade "Chocolate" and it gives the best and more natural look, in my opinion. But I will probably suggest l "Dark Brown" just to add the smudge of color to the brow.
Now, to fill them in. I use a small angled brush.
I start with the tail. I draw/fill in and extend as far as it needs to be. After doing that I start applying product to the arch and halfway the brow. I get a spoolie brush and brush/blend the product against the grain and that gives you more of a gradient brow. But if you want an eyebrow like hers then you basically outline the bottom and shape it while you're doing that. When you're done with the bottom you can either 1) blend the product up and keep adding some to areas that need it most or 2) outline the top and fill in the brow with the remaining product and blend it throughout the brow.

Btw, I'm talking about Anastasia Beverly Hills DipBrow Pomade. Also the swatches are from there also. And the jar is $18 very affordable and cheap for how amazing the product works and how little you need to achieve beautiful brows.

Anastasia DipBrow is the TRUTH! Lol, best product I've brought in 2014, and were only 2 months in so that's saying a lot.

Girl I go through this too. what helped me was I started outlining my brows with a nude pencil and then I fill them in. I've even been able to do the ombre effect on the front of my brow. Jaclyn's picture is also helpful too I used one to help me shape my brows when I tweezers them. :))
