What is the difference between concealer and foundation?

I am just starting to get into makeup and I figured I would start at the base: a good coverage. Can foundation and concealer used in place of each other? Or do you need both? Or is one better than the other?
Also if anyone could recommend brands, I would appreciate it!

Some people don't need concealer as it is used to cover blemishes like pimples or dark circles under the eyes. It can't really be used as a foundation although I have heard of some people doing that. Foundation is used on the whole face to even out skin tone and give a flawless uniform finish. I would say all make up users would use a foundation. If you think your skin is clear enough and there are no blemishes bothering you then you might want to skip a concealer although I think most people use it some times! Brand wise it really depends on your budget but MAC has lots of different products with different consistencies and levels of coverage so it might be worth it to go there and let them take a look at you and you can tell them what kind of make up you would like. I always find that they are very helpful at MAC when it comes to finding a product that I'm looking for.

The formulas are different as well. Concealer is a bit more concentrated, a bit more thicker than foundation

"I would say -all- make up users would use a foundation."

<-- This makeup user does not use foundation. Many, many, many makeup users do not use foundation.

Ok sorry! I suppose all that I have met then. Congrats if you are lucky enough to not have to use it though

Trinique My best advice for you is to look at your skin and decide what type of coverage you want. Do you want light, medium, or full. Sometimes we don't use something that we need if that makes sense lol. Like I don't NEED full coverage but I use a full coverage foundation because that's just what I like personally. Some people can look flawless with just some concealer and powder. Or even just one of two. You have to start with what you want and why you think you would like. Since you're just starting out I would suggest maybe a BB cream or a light weight liquid foundation or even just a powder. Just to get use to having something on your face. And depending on how much coverage you get from your foundation you might not even need a concealer. Makeup is all about trial and error you try something, if it doesn't work then you correct it if possible or try something else. I hope this helps you out a bit!

I really don't use concealer much. I use MAC mineralize powder for everyday looks and the studio tech for going out. You could start with a BB Cream as previously stated or only use concealer if needed.

Thank you all very much! I guess I'll have to give these all a try and find what works best for me.
