So just tried a new one for me. I'll start off with a little background.

My skin is combination, tends to be a bit dry around the nostrils. In September I had a huge breakout where normally I only get a couple annoying pimples around 'that time.' I have been struggling with the acne ever since.

Today I tried a new mask. I've used the honey. lemon, cinnamon, nutmeg one before in the past, and found that it works well as long as I only use it once a week. I exfoliate with coconut oil and baking soda mixed into a paste for 15min, then apply. This time I added something extra to the mask.

I've read about honey, lemon, egg white masks, but never found the egg whites mixed with the cinnamon and nutmeg before. Not sure why. So today I exfoliated as usual (I only do the baking soda/coconut oil once a week as well, and use St. Ives Apricot Scrub three times a week) then I mixed up the lemon, honey, nutmeg, and cinnamon, whipped up egg whites and then added all of them to it. I got the skin tightening effect as well the tingling effect(my skin isn't very sensitive to lemon, as it is for others).

I think it's a bit too soon to tell if it's going to have any adverse effects.

Has anyone else tried it or any other DIY masks?

What are DIY face mask and where do you get it?I have combination skin but my skin gets extremely oily through out the day which helps make my acne worst and then it leaves like a darkened flesh mark.

DIY stands for Do It Yourself. If you're having problems with oily skin throughout the day, try getting oil blotting towelettes. e.l.f has some that are reasonably priced and sold at local drugstores.

The apricot scrub might be the culprit in your breakouts. Exfoliating with jagged pieces of apricot causes tiny microcuts on the skin, which creates opportunities for bacterial infections like acne. "Natural" scrubs like apricot or walnut are too harsh for the face. There is a reason they use them to blast paint off of metal. ;)

Yea that apricot scrub is bad news. Way too harsh for the skin. Burt's bees makes a great facial scrub that is soft and gentle yet still does a great job. Look for their citrus facial scrub. It's probably my favorite drugstore scrub. Also just be careful with DIY and home remedies. Just like with pre-made or store bought products your skin can still have a bad reaction to any of the stuff you put on it. Just because its natural or homemade doesn't mean it can't still wreak havoc on your skin.

That's a good point Caitlin, many common ingredients in DIY remedies can cause adverse effects. Honey can cause allergic reactions if one is allergic to the pollen the bees used to make it, cinnamon is a strong irritant, lemon can cause chemical burns and photosensitivity... Please be careful when slathering the kitchen pantry on your skin.

I want using the apricot scrub when my face broke out, so I don't think that's it. I also know that I don't have any allergies to honey and lemon has never irritated my face, nor has cinnamon. I never leave the masks in longer than it takes for them to dry. I only know that I have bad effects if I use them too often.

Even if you aren't broken out the apricot scrub is bad, even for people with perfectly healthy skin. It's way too harsh and causes tiny tears in the skin, which bacteria can get into. It's not good for anyone to use it at all really. When looking for a scrub you should try to find one with round beads. They work just as well as any other type but they won't cause the tiny cuts. And that's great if you aren't sensitive but if you do have acne even natural things can be irritating, that's all Emily and I were trying to get across.

That's interesting. I've had no adverse effects since using it, as I'm sure other people have stated as well, considering the praise it's gotten. Then again, everyone has different reactions to different things.
