I'v allways wanted to go to school to become a make up artiest but I been discourage recently by people telling me it's really hard to get a job :/ when I graduate ,I really love it...but I don't know about it now.? I wanna get a make up artiest opinion about the profession?! and how the whole processes is of becoming and getting a job afterwards.

Don't be discouraged! if you enjoy doing makeup go for it! I had gone to cosmetology school but hair wasn't for me so I decided to focus in makeup. I truly love it! I started makeup school and I recently applied for MAC cosmetics and I got the job! reach for your goals! don't listen to what other people say! be confident! Trust in yourself and your dreams and goals will come true!

P.s. there are many different job fields in makeup! research and also try applying for a retail job like a cosmetics advisor for sephora or ulta or even MAC. hope this helps!

Carmel I do enjoy it , like I see professional make up artiest and just think there so lucky to be doing what they love.. I would love to do make up for a living. it would be a dream.thank you for the encouragement! I say GO FOR IT! Don't make a Plan B - focus all of your energy, efforts, creativity, and passion into turning makeup into a career. If you want to get an education, research your options. Cosmetology typically focuses more on hair, but it does give you a beauty license. Look into schools, or even just a lesson/workshop with a makeup artist you admire. Practice, practice, practice. Find models and photographers who you can work with to build a portfolio. You will probably have to work for free until you really establish yourself. Or, look for a job at a makeup counter or store. For example, Ulta has an employee discount and trains you on the products (as a Prestige Consultant). Just put yourself out there, and really network yourself! I'd be happy to discuss this more with you if you have any questions. :)

I highly recommend getting a degree before going into makeup. An associates or a bachelors is not only a nice boost on your resume that will set you apart (shows you have dedication and will elevate you to management faster in retail) but if you study something like business, accounting, or a related field you will have valuable knowledge about how to market yourself and manage your own business should you choose to be freelance.

If you are already in college, think about what your degree can contribute to your makeup career. Studying history or anthropology may help you work with historical productions (theatre, reenactments, fashion), studying biology or paleontology or animal science gives you knowledge of an array of natural systems (helping in creature design for special effects work, inspiring color palettes based on nature), etc. Everything helps, and a degree is a great foundation should you choose another career after makeup in the future.

I'm in the same boat girly. Don't get discouraged.
I have a feeling I'm about to type a crap load of stuff so please bear with me.
1.) You can do it. Don't sell yourself short. I have a quote I want to share with you "If money didn't exist, would you still be chasing the same dream?" Sadly many people out there would say no. So many people want to be doctors/lawyers/entertainers just for the rich and lavish lifestyle and financial security. Yes those things are great, but you should be passionate about what you do. "If you enjoy your job, you will never work a day in your life."
2.) Dream bigger. Don't limit yourself. If you want something to happen bad enough, it will happen. Makeup has always been my #1 passion. For practically two years know I was planning on going to cosmetology school even though you only get a week worth's of makeup education. I wanted to have the hair and nail education too. Not because I liked either, but because I wanted that financial security. Just over the weekend I decided I'm going to go with my true passion and pursue only makeup. Yes it's going to be hard. There are no makeup schools at all in the south east. None. But now I'm looking at other options. I'm even considering temporarily moving for two months to do makeup school in NYC or CA. Never limit yourself to just what's around you. Think outside the box.
3.) Network. I've been a social media junkie for years but I just learned how to really utilize it in my favor when it came to my career. I made an Instagram account just for my makeup. I only have about 70 followers but that's 70 people that care about what I do. I live in a city called Charlotte, so I searched the hashtag "#charlottemakupartist" and it's variations "#charlottemua" "cltmakeupartist." Look up your surrounding areas too. Mine were "#rockhillmmakeupartist" "#gastoniamakeupartist" You get the point. There were hundreds of women (some of them were so talented I was blown away) that practically live down the block from me that I would have never known about. Follow all of them. If you really like their work, e-mail them. I e-mailed two. One told me she's looking for an assistant and the other offered me the opportunity to shadow her next weekend. Through social media you can make tons of connections and meet hundreds of people without ever getting out of bed.
4.) College is great as far as society's standards. I may get a lot of crap for this, but I believe that traditional college is one of the biggest rip offs of all time but that's a whole different rant. At least with beauty school, makeup school or any trade school you are actually learned a skill and not just a lot of bookwork and paper writing. That's why I knew college wasn't for me. But Emily is absolutely correct, if you want to do other things within the field like become a brand rep or work at a makeup office then a degree would be really helpful in helping you land that job.
I know there's probably a hundred more things I could say but I don't want to bore you to death. Good luck in all you do and remember to dream big! Big big big!
