Over the summer I never actually lay out in the sun to tan, I'm out doors a lot so I get pretty tan but usually my stomach and back end up splotchy and everywhere else is even. I was starting to think it was how the pool water reflected sunlight. Is that it? If not, how do I prevent this from happening?

One, SUNSCREEN! Please don't tan! You will age yourself , and ruin your skin! What I suggest is self tanning! It's much easier to achieve an even ran all around! When you use sunscreen, you get a more natural goldenish glow , which in my opinion is better than looking unnaturally dark!

Tanning isn't bad it the burning part that us really bad. The skin needs vitamin D but only to a certain amount. Yes sunscreen is very important. I feel it is probably from the water that is left on the skin but at the same time no since they evaporate quickly. Sorry I don't know.

I get those on my chest sometimes, there's not really a way to prevent it

Ahh you can't honestly think putting sunscreen on your skin is any better! Don't poison yourself. Some of your body with naturally tan faster than others, which is normal. Use coconut oil or tanning lotion and make sure you're always moisturized before you tan

I don't know why that would happen but please you sunscreen. when your older I guarantee youl be happy you did.

Brittany, How does that even make sense? There are organic sunscreens that aren't going to have any bad ingredients in them. I'm not even sure what you mean by that, but using sunscreen organic or not should literally be everyone's must.

If you talk to anyone with a degree in medicine, dermatology specifically, they will tell you to use sunscreen. I'd stick with the pros on this one.

OK seriously...use sun screen. unprotected exposure to sun/UV/whatever can lead to skin cancer. its a hell of a lot.more common then cancer from sunscreen. There's a lot of things that we take into our body that can "poison " us. protect your skin, use sunscreen. I agree with brook on this...stuck with the pros on this one. Janet, you may have dry patches that need exfoliation. or maybe even slight sun damage in those.spots. but please don't oil your self up with coconut oil or whatever.

Sunscreen (full spectrum or not) is not proven to prevent cancer or aging. The only thing it can do it protect 70% of your skin from sun burn..

Sunscreen soaks into the skin and finds it's way into the bloodstream. It can not be detoxified by the liver and can be detected in blood, urine, and breast milk for up to two days after application.
Nine of the 15 sunscreen ingredients are are chemicals that interfere with the normal function of hormones, endocrine disrupters. The hormones most commonly disturbed are estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, and thyroid. They can cause abnormal development of fetuses and growing children. They cause early puberty and premature breast development in girls, and small and undescended testicles in boys. They cause low sperm counts and infertility. Endocrine disruptors that act like estrogen can contribute to the development of breast and ovarian cancers in women, and other endocrine disruptors may increase the chance of prostate cancer in men.
chemical sunscreens function by absorbing UV light. Which get used up and mutate. Some generate DNA-damaging radicals that may lead to cancers.
Sunscreen companies have been found to have a LOT of ties to pharmacies and dermatologist, there has been scandals. There's no surprise that they ask you to use it. The disgusting part is they recommend you stay out of the sun, wait till you have a bunch of problems and then treat you with expensive high intensity UV treatments. If you look at melanoma skin cancer statistics over 80% of victims developed it from medical treatments and not natural sunshine.
Do what you want, I'm not here to control you but I choose the lesser of two evils, which also happens to be the natural one.

And being organic has nothing to do with being safe, an organic ingredient is an ingredient in it's natural state, it doesn't have to be good for you to be natural, don't forget that.

Wow I can't believe what your putting out there Britney! while I can respect your
having a different opinion I cannot disagree more so would the huge scar I have on my leg from having melanoma surgically cut out. the melenoma I had was NOT caused by any kind of medical treatment(I'm not even sure what your talking about there) it was caused by tanning beds and not using sunscreen while I was baking in the sun. unfortunately back when I was younger sun care was not as in your face as it is now. even after I new the risks I ignored and did what I wanted, I wish I listened to the warnings. since being diagnosed I need full body check up every 3-6 month's as melenoma is DEADLY if not caught early (I was very lucky). I've already gone through 2 seperate byopsys and I'm sure there will be more (just being realistic) now as far as the sun and premature aging again I totally disagree I know without a doubt I would not be trying to get rid of wrinkles and sunspots if I had protected myself when I was younger. girls please be vigilant you health and looks will thank you later

I agree with Danny, too much sun and without any UV protection is just cancer waiting to happen. My dad has four sun cancers on his head right now and it's because of being In the sun too often and not covering up, he's had 3 different byopsys on each spot in the last 4 weeks because they can't figure out whether it's going to kill him or not so in my opinion sunscreen is a must. Especially if you're fair skinned like Myself or have less pigmentation in your skin. Some people don't tan, it's not possible for some people meaning they need sunscreen to prevent sunburn.

I'm not here to mother you, that's my personal choice. Yes there are still people who get melanoma, it happens, but literally all I put out there are facts. I'm sorry for your condition and all, but that doesn't mean everyone exposed to sunlight will get cancer. All I'm trying to "put out there" is that the sun is only natural, hiding from it with chemicals can not honestly be this widely acceptable it's incredible. I'm not going to mother people about it, it's their choice. All I can do is encourage people to research it themselves, in depth, check their courses, CONTACT their sources, check their credentials, look at charts- ask for specifics. I'm not guiding anyone's hand, after standing by such a controversial topic I'm sick of thick headed people who refuse to even consider what I say, and I'm not saying that's you, it's understandable being told something your whole life then not believing when someone tells you something different. So once again, sorry for your condition but shit happens, it can happen to anyone, cancer in our world is unfortunately very common and the amount of Carcinogenics were constantly exposed to is uncontrollable, so hiding yourself with one cancer by applying another one every hour only seems logical, but I personally think it isn't. I'm not going to hide from the sun, it is the reason I'm even alive and it's only natural.

You are definitely entitled to your opinion and to make your own choices but honestly its frightening to think of someone taking what your saying as the end all be all and putting themself at risk. I was in no way telling my story for sympathy of anykind, however I do appretiate your sorry but shit happens lol. I wrote that in hopes that some of the younger girls on here would take into consideration of what COUlD happen. yes in fact shit does happen nothing is guaranteed. for me I will continue to air on the side of coution and go w allll the research and professional opinions. to each their own.
Mar 9, 2014
Brittany F.
I never said you were saying it for sympathy, but as a human being I still feel it. I'm not going around telling girls to tan 25 minutes a day and to not take care of themselves. I told her not to wear sunscreen, and for good reason (as I stated above).

I know you didn't and I never said that either. as I said I respect your opinion. we can agree to disagee. have a great day :)

Honestly, Brittany, your reasoning is seriously mind boggling to me. I understand your opinion but there ARE NATURAL SUNSCREENS. For example, coconut oil. I really don't appreciate you talking like you know everything. I will do further research on this topic. But, The sun, it's only natural right? It can't hurt you right? Fire, it's only natural right? I think I'm just going to go roll around in some molten lava because it's only natural. I know I am being rude, but I seriously am stunned. There are other forms of sunscreen that are not hazardous. I am being completely bitchy and I understand that. Hormones can be disturbed by virtually anything. Everything is potentially harmful. Everything. So I apologize, I will do extensive research on this topic. I really don't appreciate your tone. Too much of anything natural is a bad thing. I think you and I both know that.

Www.aad.org, I think you should check out that site to read legitimate information on sunscreen. And also check out www.skincancer.org because these are both sites dedicated to giving you RELIABLE information in sunscreen , and sunscreen myths. It says There are very obviously certain ingredients that you need to avoid, but that doesn't mean that ALL sunscreens are harmful , Lika Brittany was implying. Also, check out www.ewg.org. Hope I could be of some kind of help! Please excuse my uncalled for little outburst slash rant!

Just need to throw this out there. coconut oil is not a sunscreen, thats a myth

Isabel that's exactly my point. Everything is potentially harmful including the sun, and I acknowledge that enough to not hide myself from one evil with another. Me and Danny were having an educated conversation and you didn't need to intervene with rudeness.

Isabel M.
Brittany, actually, I was replying to your earlier reply to me. I apologize for my rude comments, but I am not the only one at fault here. If it's not harmful, how is it evil? Using a sunscreen with ingredients that are not harmful shouldn't be considered an "evil"'. And I was making an educated argument as well. Thank you, Brittany. Once again, I apologize for my rudeness, but again, I am not the only own at fault here. Have a great day!
