I have had black hair for many years and for the last year or so I've bern dying it red. Its more like 2 thirds red 1 third black. Do you think box dying woth blonde will work instead?

I recently just dyed my hair from black to a light blonde , start by using a colour remover than the next day use loreals hi lights in ash blonde (found at Sally's) it will take you to a light brown , wait a month or less depends on how damaged you want your hair than use bleach and the same dye from loreal , you will become blonde just focus on the ends when dying instead of your roots bc your hair will be a multitude of colours!
