I want to schedule a TCA Chemical Peel over spring break. I am 16, I have moderate acne due to PMS and hormonal imbalances. I would really like to clear my skin up before summer. I've considered birth control to balance out my hormones for an easy, effective, long term remedy. However, chemical peels seem to work extremely well. What peel would be the best? How long is recovery time? How long do the results last? Will I need frequent dermo visits? :)

I've tried everything I CAN try. I forgot to mention that I'm allergic to salicylic acid I can't use pretty much any over-the-counter acne products.

I spoke with my derm a few days ago and that's how the idea of a peel came up :) I've tried tea tree oil and I broke out more! :( good to know that I'm not the only one though :)

Have you tried Microdermabrasion? it is a great way to keep your skin acne free if you have mild to moderate acne. A TCA peel would be a good option but it makes your skin really sensitive to sunlight, since you're 16, you might still have school left and college, it would affect you. Also, peels enhance the skin's sensitivity in general, you're prone, for a young girl, I wouldn't recommend it, it takes maintenance and supervision post peeling, not saying you won't be able to do that, but I think, it would be better if you wait until you're post your teens. I have had acne since I was 19, am 25 now, even after being on Accutane and having stopped it since 3 years, I cannot say that my acne is 100% gone, so honestly, I say you look into Microdermabrasion or a sonic brush before going into solutions like Accutane and peels that don't clear up acne forever.

And a peel is usually performed once a month, but the doc could advice you otherwise, your skin won't stop producing oil, peels work on the surface. The post peeling care is the most important, you would need to apply lotsa moisturiser, sunscreen twice a day and the week just after the peel would be hard to handle a bit, the skin would peel and slough off, you cannot wear makeup over it and be careful never to pick the peeling skin. Drink plenty of fluids and avoid the sun for atleast a week even after wearing sunscreen.

And I get a 20 % Salicylic acid peel done every month, keeps skin acne free if done regularly, if you stop, the acne reappear.
