Have you ever tried anything like colorfix, or color oops? I've used them and it took the black out of my hair that had been there for at least a year as well. It's probably worth a shot if you really do dislike the red :3

You will always have red undertones in your hair unless you try to lighten it as light as possible. However I do not suggest it. You should try to lighten your hair a little just to try to break up the color a bit. Then getting a brown that has a cool/ash base of green. It doesn't sound very attractive but the green will help what I call normalize the hair color.

I have naturally red tinted hair, so when I dyed it ash brown the red showed through. I used a shampoo that I found at Cleo's Salon called Watercolors-in the color Mocha, and it was supposed to remove red and brassy tones from ash colored hair. It worked great and kept my dye job lasting longer! (It's a color depositing shampoo) It wont permanently remove your red, but it will help it from showing.

You need to counteract the red. To do that, you need to get a green-based brown. If it is too orange, you need something blue-based. You have to neutralize the tones you want by using the opposite color on the color wheel. Red needs green, orange needs blue, yellow needs violet. Basics of hair color, right there. Now, if you're wanting to lightening it, you're getting in sketchy territory there where you can damage your hair quickly. Color removers are powerful, easy to screw up, & often result in many inches needing to be cut off. Tread carefully if you choose to not have a professional do it!

Look for colors that are "ash" or "neutral" when dying your hair. Unfortunately, red is the biggest color molecule so that means its the first to fade, but also the hardes to ever get out! Be careful not to damage your hair with all the dying as well. When your hair is moisturized and healthy it can hold onto the colors better and longer, and prevent your red from coming through so often.
