(I know I'm late but) Water Marbling

So I just spent TWO FREAKING DAYS figuring out how to water marble. A lot of trouble, but it was worth it, in my opinion (:

I was just wondering, do you ladies and gent(s) have any tips and tricks on water marbling? I know the general...

-Use room temp water
-Newer, higher quality polishes are better
-... well, I guess that's it

But what other discoveries have you made that helped you along? And I'm wondering, what kind of tape did you use? I feel like there's a better alternative to scotch.

I'm glad you ended up figuring out how it works! I tried once and gave up :(

I actually just got into to water marbling too.
@Morena The first time i tried it was over a year ago. It didn't go well so i gave up until a few weeks ago when my friend convinced me to give it another shot. I didn't think it would work but somehow her nails turned out gorgeous. I guess i'm just trying to say don't give up just yet. Once everything clicks into place it is such a fun manicure.

@Dylan I've used cheaper brands of nail polish to marble before. I would just test which ever colors you want to see how they spread in the water.

i don't use tape, i use vaseline around the cuticle, finger, and up to the knuckle. i find it way easier for short nails. all you do is wipe it off your skin, because the vaseline doesn't let the polish stick to your skin! plus it hydrates your cuticles!

also, once i've dipped my finger into the water marble, i like to blow on the excess before cleaning it off the surface, because it'll make it dry therefore making it easier to accumulate the excess.

...vaseline = makeup's best friend. :) That's an awesome tip Ariane.
You all are making me want to try it on my nail...as marbling paper was super fun as a kid. ♥♥♥

I would give you the same advice as Adriane. You can also use an old tube of chapstick if you don't have vaseline. I prefer tape but only because its less messy than vaseline.

I tried water marbling for the first time last year. I did good the first time, and then botched it the next 3 until I figured out the right swirling technique. I think this is my favorite of the times I did it successfully. Btw ignore the hand, my sister had bought henna to decorate her drum head and used the extra and did my forearm and hand.

@Ariane and Dani vaseline is a great idea! I also wanna try out like surgical tape, or some kind of cloth tape that would form to the finger better. My marble was done woth Sally Hansen Xtreme wear and ELF, so you can definitely use lower end, I'm just saying that a few videos I watched said that newer high end polishes were better. Perhaps we change "higher end" for "more pigmented". Everyone's marbles are gorgeous!

Okay, so call it lazy or whatever you want... but I don''t use tape! I know that it sounds nuts but, if your going to take the time to do the manicure then the hassle of not using tape is not a huge deal. With that said, I still don't even use acetone to remove the access polish. I just marble my nails and apply the top coat and wait for my nails to "hard-dry" about 10-15 minutes and I simply wash my hands using my finger to get the access polish... it comes right off! But overall I'm still working on my technique! My polishes don't spread and separate as enough to get in multiple rings of color! :(

i'm going to spam you all with some of my most recent water marbles!!! you'll notice that i tend to use some of the same colour schemes. that's partly because of the season (winter), partly because those are the colours i collect the most!

here is the most recent one i did. i think i did this one last week.

this one i used all holographic nail polishes. you can kind of see the holo effect here, but it's really cool in person!

this one i did when my nails were in horrible shape. i used a glitter top coat to add a little something extra. :)

Those are all so pretty Ariane, I love the holo one! Cool idea!

I also use a thick eyeshadow brush (like a cheap elf one... the thick, short, flat shader) to really clean up around my edges... even with tape and vaseline it's really messy for me!

My 1st attempt at Water Marbling :)

I did two blog posts on water marbling. I included all of my attempts too. I've put a couple hints and tips that I found useful but it's mostly trial and error http://thoughtsinlittleboxes.com/2011/12/20/water-marbling-nail-art-the-truth-behind-the-whimsy/ and http://thoughtsinlittleboxes.com/2011/12/20/festive-water-marbling-nail-art-featuring-opi-models-own-barry-m-and-andrea-fulerton/

My friend just made a post on my blog about water marbling. She gave the whole breakdown on how she did it & it was her very first time. Maybe, it'll help: http://missmadrigal.blogspot.com/2012/02/mani-monday-tye-dye-water-marbling.html
