i lost a few toe nails back in my ballerina days. i always waited for the nail to grow back before polishing again. also, that thick layer is totally normal. i would say be patient!

If it really bothers you, you can go to a salon and have an artificial toe nail applied (same thing as getting fake nails). The downside is that an artificial nail can affect the nail bed and cause more damage (permanent) so I really wouldn't recommend it. BUT if in six months your nail is still not back you could have permanent damage so an artificial nail won't hurt.

Hmm, that's got to be quite a bit of trauma on the nail in order to have it completely come off, maybe your shoes are too tight?? Do you have any signs of athlete's foot? The body can also reject a nail if there's some kind of infection underneath it. You might want to consult a doc on this one, losing nails is generally not a normal, healthy thing to be going on.

When I was 3 a tv fell on my foot, it took the whole nail right off of one of my toes. I'm 29 now and on that toe, it is not a normal toe nail. Pedi's at salon's are totally out of the question for me. The "nail" that did grow back, grows up (like towards the sky, not flat like nails are suppose to be)..I trim it down and file it flat...then apply nailpolish..lol But it still grows like a normal nail... It never grabs anyone's attention though, thank god. lol
