Hey guys ! How is everyone today ?
Eh, I basically wanted to start this discussion for the reason that it's my absolute dream to start my own makeup brand. :)
OK, so I've read a few blogs, watched a few YT videos on where these two brands went wrong and why people turned on them, but all I really found was people bitching and ranting on about how the founders of these lines were "liars" and every other name under the sun. I also know that there was something about repackaging things and selling them on, and as well as this, about how they get manufacturers to make their products.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't most high-end brands use private label manufacturers ? Like MAC etc ? And if that's the case, then what have Lime Crime/BSC done wrong ?
Sorry for the rant, but I just wanted to know for my own future reference !

I could be wrong, because I barely read ANYTHING on the whole scandal, but I believe the makeup they bought & resold was not meant to be resold under a different name.
Also, the fact that BSC claimed they made their own makeup when it was clear that they didn't.
I do believe companies like L'oreal makes these products specifically to make OTHER sister brands. You wont find the same product that's in a Garnier bottle in a Shu Eumura or a Redken Bottle (which are all made by L'oreal)

It sure was ! Lol, ideally I'd like to read up on making my own mineral makeup and such and do it completely from scratch myself so that I could say it's all my own work, but realistically I know if I want to make a successful brand it's just not gonna be possible.

BSC and many others get their products from Lady Burd. Also they were selling products that are marked not safe for the eyes as eyeshadows... or something like that.

OK, I see what the case is now. Thanks Joyce for that article, I'd never come across it before and it was pretty informative. So the best bet for starting a line that legally is your own is pretty much to DIY it ?

I've actually been reading articles & blogs on this since posting my comment. lol
& from what I've figured out, buying pigments from wholesale IS ok, but selling them as you get them seems to be the problem because they're meant to be mixed to make your own color. For example, mixing a pearl yellow, with a satin orange & adding gold specks of sparkle glitter - That in itself is it's own color. I saw videos on it too. I know Coastal Scents sells massive amounts of Micas (I just learned that word, lol) & pigments for eyeshadow making. So you could look into that!

I don't know anything about Lime Crime, but I do remember the BSC scandal well because I watched so many of the youtube gurus who were promoting the products. They all felt betrayed by the owner of BSC. Here they were doing tutorials and promoting products and all along the owner knew that some of the products weren't safe for the eyes. ...or at least that's what I gathered from all of the videos.

Lime Crime's scandal - the short version - was she was buying mica that TKB also sold and simply repacking under her own label then selling at a huge markup.
Bitchslap, Two Cosmetics and a few other companies are buying Lady Burd paint wheels as eye shadow when the paint wheels are not safe for the FDA and cannot be sold as eye shadow. Only one of the paint wheels is eye safe the rest are not. Bottomline is that those companies are violating FDA regulations by selling products that are not meant for the eyes.

As everyone has already stated those companies stirred up controversy because of how they ran their business. Not being truthful, threatening to sue because reviews of their products weren't positive. Selling harmful products that are not for cosmetic use. Selling private label products and saying they are unique to the company. Just bad business practices in general. While there is nothing wrong with selling private label items it's ultimately how you carry out that business. Lying and upping the prices ridiculously. I highly recommend tkb trading. I was tired of all the repackagers and decided to cut out the middle man. The micas are really great and can be used on their own just fine, and they have amazing colors to choose from. MOST makeup brands are private label. It's easier, the profit margin is so much higher, there's less hassle, they don't have to pay for a chemist, it's business.
Though I'd love to see a new brand of makeup that actually formulates from scratch with a chemist and knows what ingredients do what and why, and have a purpose for each ingredient that have NOTHING to do with the profit margin. ;)

See, that's what I'm thinking about. I'd love to learn how to mix everything myself and create my own formulas, etc so that I could truly say it was my unique brand, that sort of idea. I know it's a little unrealistic but I think it could work if I just stick to making eye and lip makeup products first, like Sugarpill and Stargazer. Then that way I wouldn't need to worry about formulating a really bad foundation that brought people out in rashes or anything.

OCC does make their own products as does Ben Nye, so it's possible. I'd love a chemist job in either lab. It looks like fun.

lime crime didn't have a 'scandal' that whole thing was started by people who were bullying its owner and trying to bring down the business :P just keeping everyone right <3

I use to enjoy her makeup tutorials when she use to do them. I have never bought nor used her products but that's due to stuff like this (image from Lipsticks & Lightsabers http://www.lipsticksandlightsabers.com/2010/01/lime-crime-beneath-glitter.html ) that has left me with the conclusion NOT to buy from her. That's my choice as it's my money.

I'll give Doe one thing. Out of all the complaints made against her she has never been accused of sending out product with foreign objects embedded in it or caustic products like Glittersniffer has. Glittersniffer was actually on FDA for her products being recalled due to the ingredients ( http://glittersniffercomplaints.blogspot.com/2011/05/glittersniffer-cosmetics-and-fda.html http://www.fda.gov/Safety/Recalls/EnforcementReports/ucm248171.htm ). Nor does she sell Lady Burd paint wheels as eyeshadows like Two Cosmetics, Ruthless or Bitch Slap (all three now have warnings it's not eye safe).
It boils down to this. When it comes to independent companies do your research first. If the company has some kind of scandal surrounding it do your own research into the complaints and determine if the complaints have merit or not. It's your money, it's your face, it's your decision. Personally I view it like this, I may have loved Toyota vehicles but considering the (deadly) controversy surrounding them I will NEVER buy another Toyota again. I wouldn't put my life in danger and while cosmetics won't kill you there are ingredients that CAN harm your skin or eyes. Not worth it in my book.

*applause for Yasmin* I couldn't have said it better myself. Glittersniffer is just bad bad business. While I would never purchase from Lime Crime it wouldn't bother me that others are. But Glittersniffer is a completely different deal.

When you start your own business, you need a couple different licenses. And you should totally go for it if it's something you want. Just remember, starting up even the smallest of businesses takes a lot of time, effort, calculations, forecasting, and investments. If you're up to it and this is your passion, do it!
