I got started by attending makeup artistry school which then helped me get a job at Estée Lauder at one of the largest department stores in Australia. It wasn't the best paying job but I got a heap of experience practicing and refining my skills that I learned at school. I think it is a really good way to get into the industry cos the big makeup companies provide lots of training for product knowledge and application, they give you freebies to play with at home, it looks good on your resume cos it shows that you have experience and most importantly it gives you networking opportunities to get to meet others in the industry.
I also started off doing makeup for friends who later told their friends who asked me to do makeup for them and so on......so word got around about my work which helped me get more work. Also, I would take pictures of the work I did and that was the start of my portfolio. I would also keep a scrapbook of cut outs from magazine articles to inspire me about new looks to try.
That's how I got started anyways, I hope that helps a bit and gives you some ideas on how you can get started :o)
