Besides using the MACRO button for makeup pics... is there any other advice you could give me to achieve a great close up??

Diffuse lighting (like an overcast day) because few shadows are cast on your face; a large white surface to reflect on (and therefore lighten) the darker side of your face - or both sides; profile setting on camera (of course). Also portraits shot at a greater distance are in better proportion. Use the zoom.

Try not taking a close up shot, and then just crop the photo so it looks like a close up. I hope that makes sense lol

Stand by a window with light and zoom in. I had this same question but now im getting better at it! Macro helps a lot if not zoom in near a window
hope it helps. heres an example. take a pic of your whole face then crop

1. keep the camera level with your face; if you shoot from the top or below it gives a weird angel
2. try not to use the flash if possible because it tends to wash you out and the makeup
3. if you can, prop your elbow up on something or use a tripod so that the camera doesn't shake and make the picture blurry
4. hold the camera farther back but zoom in; i don't know why but it seems like it works better than just holding the camera really close.
5. try to find the best lighting possible, one that won't wash you out or add a yellow tint; photoshop will be your best friend if your pictures have a weird tint to them
you can use the macro setting if you want, but if you have a dslr you can use the close up or portrait modes; they work pretty well. good luck! :)
