Try advertising for freelance work. Once you get a few jobs under your belt, and add them to your resume, employers will see you have some experience and will be more likely to hire you. Make sure you get some positive written feedback from your clients to go with it! Make up some flyers and place them on community boards in your area. Hope this helps!

right now is the best time to get to the mall and find a job! I know right now most Sephora's are looking for employees and same with most retail locations. Get out there!!! Good luck

What area are you in? in my are craigslist has so MANY posting of salons who are hiring. you can try looking on there:)

I agree with Kristen & Ivonne.
Most department stores are looking for MUAs b/c a lot of ladies [and some men] will want their face done for the holidays! Try Macy's or Nordstrom!
Also, check your craigslist! :] On the lower right corner, there should be "gigs". Search for MUA, Makeup Artist, etc.

Stephanie - I would suggest amping up your portfolio. Perhaps you can link up with a hairstylist and/or photographer. Start with Freelance and TFCD (Time for CD)....advertise as much as you can through family, friends and social networks. Goodluck! =)

I agree with everyone :)

Another option is going to www.modelmayhem.com to start up a portfolio.

This is where all the people you need in your industry are.

Hope that helps...

Freelance, especially in LA. advertise on craigslist. Network with models, photographers, artist etc who are trying to build their porfolios too, even if your doing it for free starting out. building your porfolio is key out here xoxo

Modelmayhem.com is a really great place to start. You can offer your services for free to help get jobs under your belt and boost your sell-ability to prospective clients. Craigslist.org is also another great place to market yourself for free or minimally paid gigs so you have more to add to your portfolio. Also, link up and talk to other makeup artists, photographers, videographers, etc. to see if they can use your services for future projects.

Have you tried sending out your work to agencies? Aside from that, modelmayhem.com is a good alternative!

Besides looking online I would check out the makeup counters and do some walk in's in some salons that way you have a chance to actually talk to some people face to face and may have a better chance. They may like your personality and drive and may give you a chance.

Try to do a port folio, where you show what you can be able to create. Like everything from wedding looks to scary halloween looks. And try to see if some of the major companies in the cosmetic field are seeking for some sales people, to represent their products for theircustomers. Because in todays world it is more about interacting with people and getting the opportunity to get a fod inside the company. I hope this helps you out, and good luck.

The makeup counter is one of the best places to get experience and lots of top artists including Mr. Billy B. started that way. Stay hungry and make sure to practice your craft at every opportunity. Good luck!

You also need to network as much as you can. A lot of freelancing work is word of mouth and you want to have your name circulated! Have business cards ready and build up a portfolio so that others can see your work online.

It all depends on what you're looking for and what you want to do at the end of the day. If you're looking to work in a salon, call around to a couple salons in your area and ask if any of the stylists are looking for an assistant. I'm not sure what kind of experience you had before you went to beauty school, but if you're like me and you had NONE before you went, beauty school definitely doesn't cut it to make you feel 100% comfortable behind the chair. I know that despite as many layered haircuts as I did in school, the second I had to do one on my own, I froze! I spent maybe the first year out of school unlearning everything I had been taught in class and developing my own style.
