I tend to go to this Temptalia's website and use their Foundation Matrix. http://www.temptalia.com/foundation-matrix
Just answer a few questions in the beginning and they list suitable colors in a whole lot of foundations (from drug store brands, to department stores brands, to independent online brands).
It bases the color on MAC's foundation (you will see the top may have something like NC25, NC30, or NWxx). The higher the number the darker the color. When that happens, I just go to the brand's website (i.e. Nars, Revlon, etc. etc.) and look at the colors that is "suggested". Then I pick.
