Hello Khristine- This could be tough to do on your own, but if its a must you will need to take proper precautions. By the looks of your photo you are a level 2, the new color you are wanting to achieve is about a level 5. You will need to choose a color from a beauty supply like Sally's. You will also need a developer at 25 or 30 volume to lift to a level 5. Usually a box color won't have a strong enough developer to lift the levels you are trying to achieve. YOU MUST NOT try to lift if you have any dye color on your hair, IT WONT work. You hair must be virgin color. I would suggest you see a professional to do this. But also to save pennies you can go to a local beauty school to do this, at least you will have professional product and teachers to help achieve your new color at a great price. Hope this helps!!

OK so I would recommend strongly that you use a color product for black hair for DIY. I say this because Dark&Lovely uses ingredients that are vital for maintaining the moisture and everything that is stripped from thicker rebellious hair, which is good for anyone because you need to keep the moisture and nutrients to prevent breaking and damage. Second the color that is on the box is the color that you will get exactly no extra waiting for it to color or process longer because products like that are more damaging to your hair. I recommend Dark&Lovely to you! I hope you do try if you want to color your hair! DONT do formulas that require you mixing them.

When it comes to chemical services and your hair, GO TO A PRO! I don't understand why people don't want to go so much.. but we are trained in a 1500 hr program and know how to formulate according to your hair texture and type. Since you want to go lighter, you are going to have to lighten your hair which can be dangerous to do if you don't understand the chemistry side of it. It's worth it to go to a PRO. Please think about it and don't accept any info or tips from someone untrained.. for your own sake. xo

For reds You need to go to a salon I have to because Reds fade EXTREMELY quickly and it stains your skin.

If you want to do it at home I recommend this blog (no it's not mine!) http://killerstrands.blogspot.com/

I've learned a lot from there. My hair is currently the color of the pic you posted as your desired color. It was actually fairly easy for me to achieve after reading the blog for a while. They also have a Google group where if you make your color purchase from that store you can put your order on hold and ask about your color formula from the group. Professional color lines from Sally's aren't that expensive (about $4 a tube and you need probably 2-3 + developer). Don't try to do this without reading through the blog and understanding color though!!

My natural hair color is the one in my profile pic and now it's pretty much the same color as the pic you posted. My natural level is about a 2 and I wanted level 5, so I bought a color level 8. The hard part is figuring out what color your hair leaves behind when color is lifted vs your desired color and how to balance that. I think it's easier to go red than to go for a cooler color because most hair leaves behind a warm tone when lifted.

You can do your hair at home if you educate yourself, but don't be hasty.

Good luck :)

I'd definitely advise going to a professional it's much better to spend a little more money than take the risk of it going wrong. The upkeep on red hair is ridiculous too!
