You use tongs or tweezers to pull out some of the strings, they are going to fray more when you put them in the dryer. There's a lot of videos on youtube on how to do it just search 'distressed shorts'

Just put them through the washer and dryer and they should fray out a little bit.

Open up a pair of scissors and then run them along the edge (back and forwards) until you like the way they look :)

I've used forks and cheese graters and that seems to work quite well.

Use one of these foot scrub thingys and rub it against the part you want to fray it worked very good on my shorts also you can use sand paper.
