So what is the best moisturizer for oily skin prone to acne?? I am having a hard time with this. Sometimes, even though I know it is a BAD idea, I won't put on moisturizer b/c I hate how shiny it makes my skin. Does anyone have this issue?

The same thing happens to me. and when I don't use moisturizer my skin gets dry and flaky. garnier is a good option, as well as loreal, well, for drugstore brands. cliniques dramatically different is excellent.

Hi Regina,

The Korres Pomegranate line is great for balancing the skin and regulating sebum production (the stuff that causes acne under the skin and doesn't have an oily or greasy feel.

Thank you Jessica and Alicia. I don't like the way the primer goes on without moisturizer too. Feels dry and uneven. I have noticed a lot of women talking about sunscreen as well. Would that be too much? Eye cream, moisturizer, sunscreen, primer, foundation, etc.

What kind of primer are you using? You could be using one with too much dimethicone in it which is actually really bad for oily/acneic skin. Look on the back of it - if there are any ingredients ending in "icone" you may want to avoid it.

As for a sunscreen - always :) I'm a huge advocate for sunscreen for everyone. There's so many textures out there including a great one from Peter Thomas Roth that is 100% micronized minerals so it feels like nothing on the skin and won't break you out.

Eye Cream is also essential - we don't have any glands that secrete sebum in that area so layer it on. It's also the first area (that and your hands) that will show signs of aging since the skin is so thin and delicate.

I think that sums it up haha :)

I am only just realizing how little I know about makeup and skin care. I never paid attention before but have tried to be more diligent about my skin a lot lately. I just checked some of the products I am using and every one of them have Dimethicone in them. I currently use Revlon Photoready Color Correcting Primer, Revlon Colorstay Foundation (for oily skin), Revlon Colorstay powder, Clean & Clear Advantage Acne Control Moisturizer (oil free). Even the Proactiv that I just bought has Dimethicone in it. So I guess my question is, how do you know what to buy? Or are these products ok? How much Dimithicone is too much and how do you determine that since the products don't list quantities? Ok, sorry. I guess I have a TON of questions. So confused...

And by the way Alicia, thank you so much for all of the suggestions and advice so far. I really appreciate it and hope my additional questions have not scared you off. lol.

It's no problem at all, Regina - that's what we're here for!

To answer your questions - there is medical grade dimethicone which sits on your skin, rather than clogging your pores which is what the lower grades can do. Dimethicone is essentially what gives your products that "slip". It's not the WORST thing that you could put on your skin but it's not really the best. The llamasqua Matt Primer might be a good option for your skin since you also mentioned that your skin is oily.

I was also confused why Proactiv would have dimethicone in it. Is it the disodium PEG-12 dimethicone sulfosuccinate that you are referring to? If so that's a cleasing agent (I should have been more clear that it's also the last word ending in "icone" that is of the silicone family and can lead to breakouts. Those scientists just throw words all around and make all kinds of nonsense rules ;)

Finally regarding your question about how to determine how much of something is in your product - it depends. For active ingredients such as the benzoyl Peroxide in the Proactiv you are using, you'll see this is a % usually somewhere on the packaging. For inactive ingredients such as water, dimethicone etc. they will be listed in order of the highest amount to lowest amount. So, say your foundation has dimethicone listed as the 24th ingredient down - it probably won't really affect your skin too much. If water is the first ingredient listed you're also probably in pretty good shape with your skin type you described. :)

I hope that makes sense!

And just as a side note to @Lisa and @Laken - I went to a Clinique training where I learned that one bottle of Clinique's Dramatically Different Lotion or Gel is sold every 4 seconds in the US alone. Crazy, huh?
